Women from 20 states gathered in Grand Rapids for the 54th Ms. Wheelchair America competition, a national event celebrating advocacy, leadership, and achievement among women who use wheelchairs. The week-long event includes workshops, speeches, and a crowning gala, all focused on empowering women to educate and advocate for the more than 70 million Americans living with disabilities.
For the third consecutive year, Hope Network and Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation partnered to support the 20 national contestants of Ms. Wheelchair America as they visited Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Approximately 60 individuals, including contestants, caregivers, and leadership, were transported on six iconic Hope Network red buses—demonstrating West Michigan’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
Hope Network’s specialized transportation services have been a cornerstone of mobility and independence in West Michigan for decades. The red bus fleet is a trusted symbol of accessible travel, providing safe and reliable transportation for individuals with mobility challenges.
“Accessible transportation is a fundamental component of an inclusive community,” said Bob Von Kaenel, President and CEO of Hope Network. “Our partnership with Mary Free Bed and Ms. Wheelchair America exemplifies our shared commitment to ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to participate fully in community life.”
Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation, along with the Mary Free Bed Guild, continues its role as a key sponsor of Ms. Wheelchair America’s return to Grand Rapids—an accessible city recognized for its welcoming environment for individuals with disabilities.
Grand Rapids has received “Destination Verified” status from Wheel the World, affirming its dedication to accessible travel. The designation highlights the city’s numerous accessible attractions, transportation options, and accommodations designed to ensure that visitors of all abilities can enjoy a welcoming experience.
“This event not only showcases the talents and advocacy of our contestants but also highlights the importance of accessible transportation in enabling individuals with disabilities to engage in meaningful experiences,” said Shelly Loose, President of Ms. Wheelchair America. “We are grateful for the support of Hope Network and Mary Free Bed in making this possible.”
