SWAG (Succeeding While Achieving Greatness) will host its first-ever SWAG Kids Choice Awards on May 16 celebrating young leaders ages 13 to 24 from across the Grand Rapids community. The youth-led event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Heart of West Michigan United Way, 118 Commerce Ave SW. The event is planned and produced by SWAG’s Youth Leadership Council and is designed to recognize the achievements of local youth while serving as a launching pad for future youth-driven events.
10 members of SWAG’s Youth Leadership Council will lead the event and honor five young people ages 13 to 18 for their individual achievements in the following categories: Game Changer Award (Sports), Scholar on the Rise Award (Academic), Overcoming Hardship Award, Community Service Award, and Leadership & Innovation Award.
“The SWAG Kids Choice Awards is about more than recognition—it’s about creating a platform where young people feel seen, valued, and empowered," said Wardell Frazier, Co-Founder, SWAG. "What makes this event special is that it’s being fully planned and led by youth, giving them real-world leadership experience while celebrating the impact they’re already making in our community.”
Founded in 2017 and established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2022, SWAG’s mission is to educate youth through the teaching of life skills. The organization provides out-of-school-time programs, college and career readiness initiatives, and opportunities such as free overnight camping experiences.
“SWAG’s vision is to make sure young people have access to opportunities that help them grow and lead," said Shaundra Frazier, Co-Founder, SWAG. "Seeing this event come together through the leadership of our youth council is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we trust young people with real responsibility.”
The event is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available at the Cherry Commerce Parking Ramp, 141 Commerce Ave SW, with additional street parking available on a first-come, first-served basis.
