Pop-up market celebrates and supports Black-owned businesses

Grand Rapids Area Black Businesses (GRABB) will host its 12th annual Sankofa Mixer & Pop-up Market on July 30 from 5-8 p.m. at the MLK Jr Community Center, 900 Fuller Ave SE. The free, public event will feature 20 local Black-owned vendors selling artisan candles, soaps, baked goods, and handmade wares. Admission is free.

Sankofa, a word of Akan origin, embodies the profound philosophy of "one must return to the past in order to move forward."

The Sankofa Mixer & Pop-up Market is a celebration of existing and emerging Black entrepreneurs in West Michigan. By shopping at the Pop-up Market, attendees will directly support neighborhood businesses in Grand Rapids.

"It's full circle to be hosting our annual event at the new MLK Jr Community Center in a neighborhood I grew up in," said Jamiel Robinson, President & CEO of GRABB. "The Sankofa Mixer & Pop-up Market symbolizes learning from our experiences to create a stronger, more prosperous future for Black entrepreneurs in Kent County."

During the event, attendees will also have the unique opportunity to learn about GRABB's journey and the role it has had in the development of Black businesses in the region.
