Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy (UPrep) is launching a capital campaign to expand student health and wellness programs, build a state-of-the-art gymnasium, and establish a technology hub for scholars.
The proposed $7 million campaign will create a brand-new gymnasium – the first in the academy's history – expand health and wellness programs, and establish an enhanced technology center to better prepare scholars for higher education, future careers, and an ever-changing workforce. The project will also include sports and recreation areas designed to promote teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. UPrep has already raised $4 million toward the campaign and is working to secure the remaining funds.
“A groundbreaking campaign like this will change the lives of scholars forever,” said Brian Cloyd, President of the UPrep Board of Directors. “Being able to give scholars the opportunity to excel at new activities and skills can change the trajectory of their futures. This is an exciting and beneficial change for everyone.”
The vision is to create a vibrant space where modern fitness meets a nurturing environment for activity and learning. The $5 million, 16,400-square-foot facility is designed with flexibility in mind to host school events, student-led activities, and regional gatherings. An additional $2 million will support innovative programming and provide operational funding for future school improvements and renovations.
The Learning and Wellness Center will focus on seven dimensions of scholar development: physical wellness, preventative care, creative expression, technology and innovation, social and emotional wellness, extended learning opportunities, and recreation. The center will provide scholars and community members with access to guidance, counseling, and nutritional resources that support healthy living. It will also feature gathering spaces where the community can come together, strengthen relationships, learn from one another, and foster a sense of belonging.
Since UPrep was founded, all 12 graduating classes have achieved the academy's "90/90" goal: more than 90% graduation and at least 90% of graduates accepted into post-secondary institutions. Scholars have opportunities to participate in leadership programs, arts exploration, job shadowing and internships, mentoring, early college and dual enrollment, and SAT preparation.
The project is ready for construction, with Rockford Construction and architect Isaac Norris prepared to begin work as soon as this month.
