AmeriCorps has begun a new program in partnership Kids’ Food Basket (KFB) to expand the reach of its food access and education programming. The program, made possible by a Michigan Community Service Commission grant, is the only AmeriCorps program focused entirely on creating impact in West Michigan. 9 AmeriCorps members will serve one-year terms of service focused on farm-to-school education and volunteer experience to expand KFB’s current capabilities.
AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, provides opportunities for Americans to serve their country domestically, address the nation’s most pressing challenges, improve lives and communities, and strengthen civic engagement.
“We are proud to welcome the Kids’ Food Basket AmeriCorps Program to Michigan’s growing network of service initiatives making a powerful difference across the state. AmeriCorps members play a vital role in addressing urgent community needs,” said Robert Kolt, Michigan Community Service Commission Chairman, AmeriCorps. “This new program will help West Michigan communities combat food insecurity while providing the education and resources needed to create lasting change.”
KFB began the 2026-2027 school year serving about 11,500 evening meals, called Sack Suppers, each weekday to students attending 68 schools in Kent, Muskegon Ottawa and Allegan counties. More than 20 schools remain on a waiting list for service.
“We can do so much more for local kids when we join together to take action,” said Bridget Clark Whitney, President and Founding CEO, Kids’ Food Basket. “We are honored to host AmeriCorps and look forward to working with its members as they make a deep, expanding difference for local kids and families.”
