College rocks on with Metallica Scholars Welding Bootcamp

Grand Rapids Community College has been invited to participate in the prestigious Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI) for the eighth year in a row. The grant supports GRCC’s Metallica Scholars Welding Bootcamp, an intensive welding program designed for nontraditional students. A limited number of seats are still available. The 14-week program teaches essential welding skills and helps students grow into apprenticeships and other job opportunities in West Michigan. The hands-on learning environment and smaller class sizes create opportunities for individualized instruction and career preparation. No previous welding experience is required. Those who qualify pay only $50 for the training.
“We’re proud that Metallica and its foundation continue to invest in GRCC and our students,” said John Van Elst, Dean of GRCC’s School of Workforce Training. “We’re teaching critical skills needed in our community and creating a brighter future for every student who walks into the classroom.”
MSI was launched in 2019 by All Within My Hands (AWMH) in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). The workforce initiative continues to evolve, supporting diverse fields for students interested in gaining the skills and training necessary to establish meaningful careers that provide family-sustaining wages.
“Our program is changing lives,” said James Hetfield, Metallica’s lead vocalist and primary songwriter. “We’re so proud of all the Metallica Scholars who have come through it and all the ones who will participate in it. It’s humbling to know we’ve been part of the journey of thousands of trade professionals doing good, hard work in the world.”
