At an intimate gathering on May 27, Barbara Lee VanHorssen, Founder and CEO of the Momentum Center for Social Engagement, was presented with the Disability Network Lakeshore 2025 Ability Award. The reception took place at Boatwerks Waterfront Restaurant in Holland, where board members, supporters, and community leaders came together to honor VanHorssen for her decades of advocacy and impact.

The personal setting allowed for dialogue about her work and the growing impact of the Momentum Center across West Michigan.

"Being able to present this award to Barbara in person gave us the chance to express our admiration not just for what she's accomplished, but for how deeply she lives her values," said Amanda Rhines-Poehlman, Executive Director, Disability Network Lakeshore. "Her leadership is grounded in compassion, equity, and community — and that came through in every conversation that evening."

The Ability Award Selection Committee, chaired by Carrie Dattels, Director of Disability and Accessibility Resources at Hope College, selected VanHorssen in recognition of her outstanding contributions to building inclusive communities.

"Barbara's work reflects the very heart of Disability Network Lakeshore's mission," said Dattels. "She challenges stigma, fosters connection, and creates spaces where every person feels seen and valued."

VanHorssen established the Momentum Center for Social Engagement to support individuals navigating mental illness, addiction, and disability. With offices in Holland and Grand Haven, the center offers accessible social and recreational programming for just $1 per year, removing barriers to participation while encouraging autonomy and inclusion.

Parents and guardians of Momentum Center participants reported increased confidence, skill-building, and community engagement among their loved ones. Mental health professionals have noted a measurable reduction in service needs among members, further demonstrating the program's effectiveness.

"At the Momentum Center, we believe that changing the world starts with creating community, and that community begins when we choose to see one another as whole, worthy, and human," said VanHorssen.
