Childcare challenges drive focus on workforce retention and recruitment
Employers across West Michigan are invited to explore how childcare solutions can strengthen workforce stability, retention and recruitment during a Workforce Together Lunch and Learn on April 14. The free, one-hour event will take place from noon to 1 p.m. at the West Michigan Works! Grand Rapids NW Service Center, 215 Straight Ave NW, and will highlight practical, scalable approaches to supporting working parents and prospective employees.
Childcare remains a significant barrier for many workers. According to a 2023 West Michigan Works! job seeker survey, of which approximately half of respondents were employed, 9.1% reported needing childcare, 78% said it is difficult to pay for care, 76% would likely use financial assistance and 69% would likely use on-site childcare if available.
“Childcare is one of the most common and complex barriers we hear from both job seekers and employers,” said Karrie Brown, business solutions manager, West Michigan Works!. “When businesses take steps to support working parents, whether through financial assistance, partnerships or innovative programs, they’re helping their employees, strengthening their workforce and improving retention.”
Panelists will share real-world strategies to address childcare challenges for working families, including:
Schreiber Foods’ Child Care Assistance Program, which supports eligible employees by covering 50% of qualifying childcare expenses each month, helping reduce financial strain and improve access to quality care.
Gentex Corporation’s partnership with Outdoor Discovery Center, which led to the creation of a nature-based preschool for employees’ families, offering a creative solution to childcare shortages in the Zeeland area.
Wolverine Coil Spring’s participation in the MI Tri-Share program, a cost-sharing model that divides childcare expenses among the employer, employee and the State of Michigan to make care more affordable and accessible.
West Michigan Works!’ six Industry Talent Councils have collaborated to support the Workforce Together Lunch and Learn series, which provides employers with insights and resources to address workforce challenges across industries. Additional sessions will be offered throughout the year. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.
