Collaborative approach helps employers close workforce gaps

A group of West Michigan nonprofits has received $73,860 in state workforce training funds through the Going PRO Talent Fund’s Employer-Led Collaborative (ELC) award. The Source, in partnership with Kent School Services Network, Family Promise of West Michigan, and Heart of West Michigan United Way, was awarded funding to support leadership and professional development training for their staff.
This marks one of two ELCs awarded through West Michigan Works! so far in fiscal year 2025, totaling $77,844 and benefiting 12 employers across both awards.
The four nonprofits serve Kent County and its surrounding areas, sharing aligned missions to support underserved and economically disadvantaged individuals and families. Like many nonprofits, they are navigating workforce challenges, including reduced federal funding, economic uncertainty, higher turnover, and a strong dependence on philanthropy.
"We saw a meaningful opportunity to collaborate with our peers through shared learning and are grateful to be awarded these funds," said Joyce Rohrer, Director of Business and Community Engagement, The Source.
The collaborative will receive classroom training from two local providers: Human Solutions and Frontline Training Solutions. Human Solutions is developing self-awareness and emotional intelligence among individuals in leadership roles. Frontline Training Solutions is providing practical tools for staff who manage multiple responsibilities while supporting individuals and families.
“Challenges like tightening budgets and increasing service demands are becoming more prevalent across the nonprofit sector,” said Angie Barksdale, COO, West Michigan Works!. “Collaborative training empowers organizations to build internal capacity, support staff development, and ultimately enhance the services they deliver to the community.”
While this most recent award supports a nonprofit-led effort, the ELC model is open to all employers. Any business or organization with shared talent needs can collaborate to strengthen its workforce through coordinated training.
The collaborative reflects a broader commitment to workforce development across sectors. ELCs bring together at least two employers, training institutions, and other partners to address shared workforce challenges through classroom or customized training. ELC applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will remain open until available funds are exhausted.
