In observance of Radon Action Month, the Kent County Health Department (KCHD) is teaming up with the Kent District Library (KDL) to provide free radon test kits to residents. KCHD staff will host an informational table from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at one KDL branch each Tuesday in January. Residents can pick up a kit, ask questions, and learn more about protecting their homes from the colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas responsible for approximately 21,000 deaths in the U.S. each year:
Plainfield Branch, 2650 5 Mile Rd. NE, Grand Rapids: Jan. 6
Cascade Branch, 2870 Jacksmith Ave. SE, Grand Rapids: Jan. 13
Grandville Branch, 4055 Maple St. SW, Grandville: Jan. 20
Kentwood Branch, 4950 Breton SE, Kentwood: Jan. 27
“We’re excited to continue this partnership and welcome residents into our library spaces for meaningful conversations about health and safety,” said Randall Goble, Director of Engagement, KDL. “Libraries are trusted community hubs, and this initiative allows us to connect people with practical resources and reliable information where they already gather. Ask us about our radon detectors, available for check out, while you're here!”
Radon forms naturally from the breakdown of uranium in the ground, but can sneak into buildings through foundational cracks, floor drains, and sump pits. Over time, the radioactive particles can accumulate in the air, increasing the risk of lung cancer—making radon the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. behind smoking. Fortunately, testing for radon is simple and recommended this time of year as doors and windows are typically closed due to colder weather.
"Just like carbon monoxide, radon can’t be detected by the human senses,” said Sara Simmonds, Environmental Health Director, KCHD. "Since there are no warning signs or symptoms from radon exposure, testing is the only way to know if a building and the people in it are at risk."
Residents may also pick up free radon test kits at KCHD's main clinic, located at 700 Fuller Ave. NE in Grand Rapids, while supplies last. To learn more, call 616-632-6900. To find a KDL branch, visit kdl.org or call 616-784-2007.
