First Steps Kent has announced the creation of an Early Relational Health Initiative, a new effort designed to foster strong, positive connections between young children and their adult caregivers in Kent County. This initiative aims to increase awareness and expand access to services that promote healthy early relationships, laying a critical foundation for lifelong well-being.
First Steps Kent is collaborating on the project with a team of experts at Georgetown University, including the leader of a similar initiative in Bridgeport, Connecticut that is successfully improving outcomes for children and families. Additional funding for the project comes from BCBS of Michigan and the Wege Foundation.
Early relational health refers to the emotional bonds formed between infants and toddlers and their parents or other caregivers during the earliest years of life. Research shows that these relationships are essential for brain development, social-emotional growth, and long-term health outcomes. By supporting parents, caregivers, and early childhood professionals, the initiative will help create nurturing environments where children can thrive. We might want to add about the benefit caregivers experience through the reciprocal nature of strong bonds
“The earliest relationships in a child’s life shape their future in profound ways,” said Jennifer Headley-Nordman, president, First Steps Kent. “By prioritizing early relational health, we are strengthening families, supporting child development, and building a healthier, more resilient Kent County.”
This initiative aligns with First Steps Kent’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that all young children in Kent County have the support they need to reach their full potential. The organization invites community partners, parents, and stakeholders to join in this effort to prioritize the earliest relationships in a child’s life.
