The Holland Farmers Market will host Market School, a series of monthly educational classes for adults, running from June to September. Topics include beekeeping, sourdough baking, healthy cooking, and more, with all sessions hosted by local experts and friends of the Holland Farmers Market.

All Market School classes are held at 10 a.m. on the fourth Saturday of each month in the Market View Room at Holland Civic Center Place, 150 W. Eighth St. Classes are approximately one hour and cost $20 per person. Each attendee will also receive an insulated Holland Farmers Market tote bag.

“Our entire team is passionate about providing learning opportunities for the community, and the monthly Market School classes allow us to do that for adults, in much the same way as our weekly Kids Activities for children in the summer,” said Kara de Alvare, Marketing Coordinator, Holland Farmers Market.

The series begins Saturday, June 27, at 10 a.m. with Welcome to Beekeeping, presented by local beekeeper and Holland Area Beekeepers Association member Donald Lam. The class will introduce participants to the basics of backyard beekeeping, including equipment, startup costs, available resources, and the benefits of maintaining a hive. Attendees will also learn about the different types of bees within a hive, the roles of worker bees, honey varieties, hive safety, and important information about bee stings.

Lam and his wife, Jean, have been keeping honeybees in the Holland area for 35 years. In addition to leading educational programs, they provide pollination services for growers, produce honey sold in local stores, and supply bees and equipment to area beekeepers. The couple also operates a beekeeping store in Holland and represents the Holland Area Beekeepers Association at community events.
