Grand Rapids home to nation's only nonprofit offering free play therapy

As International Play Therapy Week shines a light on the power of play in supporting children’s mental health, Grand Rapids is home to the only nonprofit in the U.S. offering play therapy services completely free of charge: THE PLAYGROUNDgr.

THE PLAYGROUNDgr offers free play therapy sessions, community-based workshops, school partnerships, camps, and special events to support children facing trauma, grief, behavioral challenges, and other emotional hurdles.

“At THE PLAYGROUNDgr, we’re removing cost, insurance, and transportation as barriers to care,” said Jacqueline Scherer, Executive Director, THE PLAYGROUNDgr. “Play is the language of healing for children and every child deserves access.”

THE PLAYGROUNDgr operates from a dedicated therapy space in Grand Rapids and also delivers services directly in schools and neighborhoods throughout West Michigan.

“Research continues to affirm what play therapists have long understood: play builds connection, supports emotional regulation, and creates a safe path toward healing,” said Scherer. “We’re proud that Grand Rapids is leading the way.”
