New coffee series connects policymakers and early childhood advocates

First Steps Kent has launched Morning Matters, a new series of informal coffee conversations designed to bring together policymakers, early childhood professionals, advocates, and community members. The goal is to build stronger relationships and create better outcomes for young children and families across Kent County.
Each Morning Matters session provides a relaxed setting, more akin to a coffee shop than a conference room, for open dialogue about how policy decisions impact the lives of children and the professionals who support them. The sessions typically consist of 60-minute gatherings that include introductions, story sharing, and authentic discussions over coffee.
“This series is about connection,” said Daniel VanderMolen, Vice President of Impact, First Steps Kent. “We want decision-makers to hear firsthand from those on the ground—parents, providers, and community leaders. Stronger relationships lead to smarter policies and stronger families.”
By creating space for meaningful dialogue, Morning Matters supports First Steps Kent’s mission to ensure every young child in Kent County has a strong start in life. The initiative aims to reinforce the importance of listening, learning, and working together to build a community where families and children can thrive.
The first Morning Matters conversation took place in July, with Representative Stephen Wooden engaged in a thoughtful exchange with early childhood professionals and local advocates. Additional sessions are being planned for the coming months with both state and local policymakers.
First Steps Kent welcomes the public to join the next Morning Matters with State Representative Carol Glanville on July 28 from 10-11 a.m. at Eden Cafe.
