Calvin University has launched its new school of engineering and computer science, bringing together its long-established engineering and computer science programs under a unified vision for the future.

The new school builds on decades of academic excellence while positioning Calvin to lead as engineering, artificial intelligence, computing, automation, aerospace, and emerging technologies reshape nearly every aspect of society.

“Technology is transforming our world at an unprecedented pace,” said Greg Elzinga, President of Calvin University. “The future requires more than brilliant engineers and computer scientists. It requires leaders who will design, develop, and advance technologies with wisdom, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility. Calvin’s new School of Engineering and Computer Science will prepare graduates who combine technical excellence with Christian purpose to create innovations that improve lives, serve others, and honor God.”

For decades, Calvin has held ABET accreditation and has been among the earliest accredited engineering programs in Christian higher education. Calvin’s computer science program also holds ABET accreditation and has produced graduates who are highly sought after by employers and graduate schools alike.

The Calvin University School of Engineering and Computer Science will continue to offer Calvin’s ABET-accredited engineering and computer science degrees while providing a platform for future academic growth. Current engineering concentrations include aerospace, chemical, civil and environmental, electrical and computer, energy/environment/sustainability, mechanical, and mechatronics engineering.

“This school reflects who we have been for decades and where we are going in the future,” said Kevin de Dulk, Interim Provost at Calvin University. “Our students receive a rigorous technical education, but just as importantly, they learn to ask the questions that matter. How can technology improve lives? How do we innovate responsibly? How do we design solutions that contribute to human flourishing? Those questions define the Calvin difference.”

Looking ahead, the school plans to enhance and strengthen its core offerings in rapidly growing fields including resilient infrastructure, advanced energy systems, biotechnology, automated systems, artificial intelligence, advanced computing, cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies while expanding industry partnerships, undergraduate research, experiential learning, and graduate education.

For students, the launch of the new school means even greater access to hands-on learning, faculty mentorship, internships, research experiences, and industry connections that prepare graduates for successful careers in engineering and computing.

For employers, it signals a continued commitment to developing graduates who combine technical expertise with communication skills, ethical leadership, creativity, and adaptability.

For alumni and donors, it represents a strategic investment in engineering and computer science - building on decades of excellence while creating new opportunities for innovation, discovery, and student success.

The launch also reflects the growing demand for graduates prepared to lead in fields increasingly shaped by software, automation, robotics, aerospace, cybersecurity, data science, and artificial intelligence.

“This is far more than preparing students to develop and build technology,” Elzinga said. “At Calvin, we prepare students to build technology that improves lives, serves others, and honors God.”
