Kids’ Food Basket will host a community open house Oct. 9 from 3 to 7 p.m. at its new Muskegon facility, 2330 Barclay St. The free event will feature tours, volunteer sign-ups, children’s activities, and fall refreshments.
“We have been looking forward to welcoming neighbors into our new, permanent home in Muskegon for quite some time,” said KFB VP of Philanthropy Tamara VanderArk-Potter. “It has been wonderful to see operations begin in this beautiful space full of possibility, and we are honored to deepen our commitment to serving Muskegon County, side by side with our inspiring community.”
The nonprofit purchased and renovated the building earlier this year in response to community demand for expanded services. Since moving in September, operations have grown by 300 Sack Suppers – healthy evening meals distributed to local kids – bringing the daily total in Muskegon County to 2,300. Volunteers packed the first meals Sept. 15, and additional growth is anticipated as the school year continues.
Open house activities include Bee Bot STEM games, apple taste tests, souvenir microgreen planting, and cider with fall treats. No RSVP is required, and the event is open to all ages.
Approximately 59% of Muskegon County students qualify as economically disadvantaged; however, last year, only 13.5% of those children received Sack Suppers. The new facility is designed to expand access, offering more meal capacity as well as space for cooking lessons, community gatherings, and a barn classroom for nutrition and agriculture education.
Kids’ Food Basket is a West Michigan nonprofit serving Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, and Allegan counties. The organization provides about 11,000 evening meals each weekday across 62 schools, alongside farming, food distribution, and educational programs.
